Let's Talk About Racism

Let's Talk About Racism

Everyone should feel safe, respected, and treated fairly-whether they're at work, in hospital, or out in the community. This page will help explain what racism is, how to spot it, and what we can all do to stop it.

What is Racism?

Racism is when someone is treated unfairly or badly because of their skin colour, background, or where they're from.

Sometimes it's very obvious. Other times it's more hidden. But it still hurts.

There are different kinds of racism:

  • Systemic/Structural Racism: This is when unfair rules or systems make life harder for some people, even if no one means to hurt them.
  • Institutional Racism: This is when an organisation, like a hospital or school, doesn't treat everyone fairly-sometimes without realising.
  • Everyday Racism: Like rude jokes, unfair comments, or not listening to someone properly because of how they look or sound.

Bias, Stereotypes & Microaggressions

Bias means we sometimes make quick judgements without knowing someone properly.
Stereotypes are unfair ideas like people from that group always act this way. That's not true or kind.
Microaggressions are small comments or actions that feel hurtful-like asking, Where are you really from? even after someone says Coventry.
