Reciprocal mentoring
Staff have the opportunity to be part of an inclusive reciprocal mentoring programme. Reciprocal mentoring enables people in senior positions to learn from and understand issues from the perspective of people in less senior roles from under-represented groups. At the same time, less senior people are exposed to new ideas, experiences and networking opportunities. Reciprocal mentoring is different from traditional mentoring. The pairs are equal partners in the process of learning, and the relationship is reciprocal. The approach aims to focus on systematic change as well as at an individual level.
Who can get involved?
Any employee of CWPT can volunteer to be a mentor. We would encourage people with a protected characteristic, which also includes, disability and LGBT+ to take this opportunity to raise greater awareness and understanding of their experiences. Mentees will include our Leadership Team (which includes our Trust Board).
What are the benefits?
- develop a deep understanding of the organisational and cultural barriers that maintain workplace inequalities
- gain valuable insight to 'normalise' conversations around protected characteristics
- gain an awareness of that everyone has their own unique experiences of discrimination and oppression
- enable a platform where the mentor is able to talk about their experiences openly
- enable both parties to 'step outside' their comfort zone in a safe and confidential way and challenge each to try new ways of thinking
- provide mentors with a greater understanding of the attributes and skills needed for senior positions.
