Spotlight on a Service: Stanley House, older adults and dementia

A unique insight into one of our key services
We spoke to our team at Stanley House who provide inpatient and respite care for older men and women with dementia.
The staff at Stanley House are on the frontline of helping older adults with dementia. The service is a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, healthcare assistants and allied health professionals.
Stanley House is part of the Manor Court hospital site in Nuneaton and the ward is a bustling environment with 12 private rooms, an accessible shower and toilet facilities and bright lounges with cosy armchairs.
The Alzheimer's Society reports that dementia is the UK's largest health and social care issue of our time and the team at Stanley House works hard to support people to live well with dementia.
Dementia can be a very unpredictable disease which means the staff at Stanley House have to be ready for anything, but routine and stability are very important for their patients. Everyone is encouraged to get up and dressed for the day, and the team try to make sure patients use the communal areas rather than spending their time isolated in their rooms.
Activity coordinators play a key part at the ward by ensuring there are things to do for those who like to keep busy.
Stanley Ward has the best admission and discharge rate in the older adults services. This is one of the areas the team are extremely proud of and feel it reflects the high standard of patient care they deliver. Jane Morgan, Ward Manager, joined the team in January 2023 and the team feels this achievement is a testament to her hard work and dedication.
Why the team do what they do...
We absolutely love what we do. We help ensure patients are in a dementia-friendly environment, which frees up acute hospital beds too. We all want to provide people with the same care and respect we would want for our loved ones, giving them best quality of life.
